Comba residents fume over damaged sewage chamber
MARGAO
A damaged sewage chamber inundated a volleyball court, contaminated a drinking water well and forced the residents to dismantle a Christmas crib as sewage water gushed out of it posing nuisance to the Comba locality along the ring road.
The incident forced the local youth to stop playing volleyball since the last two days. They also removed and kept at a safe place the statues in the crib, while local residents cried foul over the sewage water finding its way in their age-old well.
The Bandodkar fami
ly was the worst hit as the sewage water found its way in their drinking well, contaminating the water. Milan Bandodkar told The Goan that the entire area is enveloped with sewage odour, making the lives of the local residents miserable. "We cannot get sleep as the area is enveloped with foul smell. The situation may even affect the health of a four-month old infant. Our drinking well has been devastated," Milan said, while asserting that the residents will be forced to dump truck loads of mud on the damaged chamber if there's no immediate intervention by the government authorities.
Another resident, Minguel Coelho, a resident of Comba said the government authorities have turned a blind eye to the sewage menace, leaving the residents to fend for themselves.
"The youth could not play volleyball since the last two days. The Christmas crib has been flooded with sewage water," he said, while demanding action by the government authorities.
This is not the first time that the Comba area has been hit by the damaged sewage chamber.
Though the government had in the past promised to replace the damaged 16-km line from Chandrawado-Fatorda to the Sirvodem sewage treatment plant at a cost of Rs 90 crore, work on the underground sewage line replacement work is yet to commence till date.
