MARGAO
Confusion prevailed over the location of the Navelim feast fair, with a group of organisers shifting the fair this year near the district library falling in the jurisdiction of Margao Municipal Council.
In another development, the carpenters have decided not to display their furniture items at the Navelim fair this year, citing delay in granting them permission at the old place and their decision not to participate in the fair near the district library building.
That’s not all. Margao Municipal ward councillor Mohammed Jaffer Budhani, who is representing the district library area, vehemently opposed granting of permission for the fair near the library. However, the organisers have received permission from the Margao Municipal Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai.
The MMC chairperson told The Goan that the Municipality has granted the organisers the permission to set up the fair in the fields near the district library building on the condition that they pay to the Municipality fees amounting to Rs 30,000 per day, besides the garbage fees.
The ward councillor, Jaffar Budhani, however, pointed out that he has received complaints from local residents against the fair stalls near the library on grounds that it would cause nuisance and may disturb the peace and law and order situation in the area.
Meanwhile, general secretary of the Carpenters Association Durgesh Shirodkar told The Goan that carpenters, who are members of the Association will not participate in the fair at Navelim on Wednesday. “The carpenters took the decision not to participate in the fair on Monday night since there was a delay in granting them permission to set up the stalls at the old place and that they were not in favour of moving their stalls near the district library building,” he said.
“The carpenters participate in the fairs not just to sell their products but to showcase their work. We decided not to put up stalls near the library building which falls in Margao when the feast is in Navelim,” he added.
He pointed out that the carpenters will now participate in the feast of Holy Spirit Church, Margao scheduled on December 8.
