Decrying the Environment Clearance (EC) to enhance coal operations at 2 berths at Mormugao Port Authority (MPA), prominent activist and Dabolim Congress leader Viriato Fernandes accused the State government of attempting to destroy whatever is remaining of Goa.
"When the public hearing was held in April 2017 and the three days hearing went on for ten days due to various objections and facts put up by activists and organisations. The government took six years to give clearance, and all activists who proved that these expansions and three linear projects were meant for transportation of coal have been admitted by the government with this EC clearance,” said Viriato.
“The sad and dangerous part is that Mhadei water diversion is also connected with this EC clearances because steel plants will require a massive amount of water and that water has to be diverted from Mhadei.”
“The coal is required for North Karnataka and water has been diverted from Mhadei as plans for setting up steel plants which require coal and water. All these things are connected, and the BJP government will destroy whatever is remaining of Goa.”
“The BJP has carried out a three-dimensional attack on Goa where our air is polluted, our lands are being given and water is also given to these capitalists friends of the BJP,” added Viriato.
