The Congress on Saturday said it will contest the 2022 elections without declaring the chief ministerial candidate and thereby maintain the best democratic convention.
The grand old party also vowed to put a wholehearted effort to defeat the insensitive and arrogant BJP-led government and bring a new Congress-led government to power in the State.
“People elect the MLAs and the elected representatives will then elect the leader who will go on to be the chief minister of the State. The Congress functions in the best democratic traditions and will elect a leader after the elections. We do it in all the States,” said Vijay Bhike, President, North Goa District Congress Committee (NGDCC).
The NGDCC chief was responding to a query of a journalist at a news conference after launching a door to door campaign in North Goa against the misdeeds of the BJP-led government.
Former Calangute MLA and Goa Pradesh Congress Committee Vice President, Agnelo Fernandes and several other senior Congress leaders were also present on the occasion.
Continuing, Bhike said the presence of new parties in this election will make no impact on the prospects of the party and predicted that Congress will definitely form the government in 2022.
“We will work to see that Congress wins 20 seats in North Goa and therefore begin a door to door campaign to expose the mistakes committed by the BJP-led government. Every Congress block will knock the doors of the people and pinpoint the defects of this government,” he said.
He also said that MLAs leaving the party will make no difference to the party as the karyakartas are firmly with the party and will ensure the victory of Congress at the hustings.
According to former Calangute MLA, Agnelo Fernandes, Goans were fed up with the present government and wanted a change.
“People do not want a BJP government back again. But due to the entry of some new parties people are a little confused. We appeal to people not to get carried away with false promises. There is no need to get confused. Congress has to be brought to power,” Fernandes said.
“If you are concerned for the safety of women, jobs on merit and do away with drugs and prostitution in the state then the only alternative is elect a Congress government,” he added.
