Making a fervent plea to politicians of all hues to stop fooling the Muslim community on the kabrastan issue, president of the Sahara Urdu Academy, Urfan Babloo, on Wednesday said the Muslim community has asked the Congress to give two Assembly seats to Muslims in the coming 2017 election.
Urfan told the media that Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President, Luizinho Faleiro, has assured the community that the party leadership take cognizance of the demand to field two Muslim candidates, one each in North and South Goa in the 2017 election.
“We have made this demand so that the Muslim community is also given representation in the election. The community has been supporting candidates fielded by political parties and it’s time these parties in turn field candidates belonging to the community,” he said.
On the contentious issue of kabrastan that has been dragging on for years now, Urfan said that the political class should stop fooling the Muslim community by making false promises. He said though the government has acquired land for the kabrastan since the last four years at Sonsodo, no development has taken place at the site.
“This being the election year, politicians of all hues will come back to fool the community, but we will not fall prey to their empty promises,” he said.
Urfan slammed the government for doing nothing to promote Urdu education in the state. He said while permissions sought to open more Urdu schools have been turned down, the government has also not regularised Urdu teachers, who are employed on contract for fault of the government.
He said in a bid to take up the cause of the Urdu speaking population, a branch of ETV Urdu channel will be opened in Goa on Thursday.
