The Congress on Monday decried the PWD’s efforts to supply water tankers only to those residents of the city who called up and complained that they were not getting water in the mains.

The party gheraoed the principal chief engineer of the PWD Uttam Parsekar because of the prolonged water cut in the city due to the dislocation of two pipelines.

Spokesperson Amarnath Panjikar, addressing the media after the protest, said, “The PWD engineers took water only to the people who called them up. When in fact they should have provided water to everyone with a connection.”

Panjikar added that it was unfair that people who were paying for a water connection had to buy water when faced with the crisis.

“The PWD knows where its connections lie. It was their duty to make sure tankers reached people who were affected by the crisis. People need water to use the toilet. Everything else like water for bath and cleaning and cooking is secondary. But residents couldn’t even get water to flush their toilets,” Panjikar lamented.

He was joined by Youth Congress president Varad Mardolkar, and other leaders like Jana Bhandari. The party demanded that water tankers be increased till the crisis ended.

Meanwhile, the party also raised concerns with Parsekar about the bad roads in the state which were worsened by the monsoon showers.

Parsekar assured them that he would within a week’s time, try to address all their grievances.
