PERNEM
Days after a police driver allegedly bit the sarpanch of Cotigao-Canacona, a police constable and his friend were arrested on charges of assaulting two tourists from Pune at a restaurant in Paliem-Pernem on Sunday.
According to Pernem police, the tourists, Ajay Salvi and his son, Abhishek, had gone to Paliem and were at a restaurant.
Sometime later, a police constable, Ritesh Manerkar (24), and a friend, Dilip Payaji (22) went to the restaurant and demanded a cigarette from Abhishek.
Abhishek said he did not have cigarettes as he was not a smoker.
His reply reportedly angered Manerkar and Payaji, and both allegedly began assaulting the victims. Since one of the accused was a cop, no one went to the rescue of the two tourists.
Police said the accused then left the site after threatening them with dire consequences if they reported the incident to the police.
Abhishek and his father then contacted their relatives in Aronda-Maharashtra and a relative rushed to the site and admitted them into the District Hospital in Mapusa.
The relative then filed a police complaint at the Pernem Police station and acting on the complaint Pernem police arrested Manerkar and Payaji under Sections 323, 326, 506 and 504 of the IPC.
Investigations are in
progress.
