In a bid to improve policing and increase the confidence of the public in the police, the Mapusa sub-division police launched the “walking the beat” initiative in Mapusa town and other villages. A senior police officer is an essential part of this exercise.
Under this initiative, police officials are now required to undertake foot patrolling, meet people and attend to any illegal activities that come to their notice.
An initiative of DGP Jaspal Singh, the “walking the beat” exercise is expected to improve policing and bring the law and order problem under control in the State.
“There is always a complaint that police are not seen on roads and beat areas. That is why the DGP has started the 'walking the beat' system in the State. It will bring about a sense of security among the people. If during the foot patrolling any illegality comes to our notice we take immediate action,” said Mapusa SDPO Jivba Dalvi.
He said during the exercise, police will be booking cases such as smoking, spitting, gambling etc.
In the first such initiative organised in the streets of Mapusa town, Mapusa Police managed to apprehend a matka bookie who was openly taking bets on the street.
“During the foot patrolling in Mapusa, we came across a person taking matka bets from the public. On the spot, a raid was conducted and Rs 1,100 cash and other gambling articles were attached. The person was booked under Section 11 (2) of the Goa Daman and Diu Public Gambling Act,” Dalvi informed.
Similarly, during a similar foot patrolling exercise in Colvale, Colvale Police attached a bike which did not have the mandatory number plate.
The Mapusa SDPO informed that “walking the beat” will be regularly carried out in all beat areas of the Mapusa sub-division which has three police stations “ Mapusa, Colvale and Anjuna.
