Corlim locals have decided to oppose the proposed jetty which is being planned at Banastarim as fears were expressed that it would be used for coal transportation.

It was also decided to seek an extension of three months so that a comprehensive coastal zone management plan is prepared for Corlim.

The decision was taken as social activist Abhijit Prabhudessai and his team explained the draft CZMP for Corlim in detail to the villagers at a special meeting held in the panchayat hall on Sunday.

Speaking to The Goan, sarpanch Shiva Naik informed that Prabhudessai explained that a jetty is planned at Banastarim which would have impact on the locals of

Corlim and hence it was

opposed.

“We also sought more time to prepare final CZMP for Corlim,” Naik added, while stating that a resolution to this effect would be submitted to the government.

A local Richard Pereira informed that Prabhudessai informed that once the CZMP is passed, the government will do whatever it wants and stop fishing as well as farming activities.

“We were apprised that bundhs will be replaced by concrete walls, land will be forcefully acquired by the government and people will not be able to use it as they want,” he informed.

“Prabhudessai stated that it is important to weed out the anomalies in the CZMP plan as khazan fields are shown as CRZ areas, resulting in high tide line being shifted inland thereby affecting many houses,” Pereira stated.
