Even as eyebrows have been raised in certain quarters over former MLA Francisco Silveira's nephew getting elected unopposed in Agassaim panchayat, St Andre MLA Viresh Borkar has clarified that it was because he could not find a suitable OBC candidate to contest in that ward.
Replying to a question by The Goan on the issue, Borkar said that he was ready with a candidate in ward 1 as initially it was reserved for the general category.
“However, when the reservations were announced, the ward got reserved for OBC which changed the calculations. I tried my best to find a suitable OBC candidate to contest in the ward but was unable to do so,” Borkar added.
“Also, there was very little time to find a candidate who had an OBC certificate,” the MLA added.
When pointed out that one more candidate, from Batim, has also got elected unopposed, Borkar claimed that the candidate has extended support to him.
