Emphasising on the importance of stability in a municipal council, Vasco BJP MLA Carlos Almeida on Friday said MLA and councillors needed to work in close coordination to promote development works.
Almeida was addressing a news conference organised to highlight development works undertaken by the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) during the last five years.
Outgoing MMC chairperson Nandadeep Raut, former MMC chairperson Deepak Naik and councillors Yatin Kamurlekar and Fredrick Henriques were also present at the news conference.
They highlighted various achievements while the Almeida backed panel of councillors was in power.
While Deepak Naik was chairperson of MMC for the first 32 months, Nandadeep Raut also served as MMC chairperson for around 16 months.
Almeida said the development was only possible if the MLA and the councillors worked together.
"Stability of the council is important and only a stable council can give development to the city and we have proved it.”
“We have taken up major works on drainage, anti-flooding measures, development projects and Covid management," said Almeida.
Deepak Naik said while the MLA takes steps to develop his constituency, wards in the constituency can benefit automatically if they collaborate with the MLA.
“As far as council politics is concerned, the MLA decides on the panel of councillors and candidates right for a particular ward. The panel of contestants for the upcoming municipal elections will be decided by the three MLAs of Vasco, Mormugao and Dabolim,” he said.
“Though council elections are not fought on party lines, most councillors are backed by political parties. Every council requires the government’s support to take up development and we are confident that the BJP-backed panel will come back in power again in the upcoming elections," said Naik.
