Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC ) ward councillor Krishna Daji Salkar on Saturday got a prime area located in the heart of the city reserved for the prestigious Chief Officer’s bungalow project fenced by a cloth mesh at his own cost.
Salkar also appealed to the people not to misuse the property and convert it into a garbage dumping site.
Speaking to the media, Salkar said that he was hurt that the area reserved for the prestigious project had become a junkyard with scrapped vehicles being parked in the area.
“This prestigious signature project has been pending for so many years because of some technical issues. While MMC initially parked their scrapped vehicles here, some people started dumping garbage in the open space creating an eyesore and causing health concerns,” he said.
“There is a residential area and also a hospital in the area. After garbage dumping did not stop, I wrote to the MMC more than three times to fence the area and nothing happened to date. I later decided to fence the area at my own cost and informed the MMC Chairperson about my plans and he gave me the go-ahead,” Salkar said.
“This fencing was the need of the hour to prevent people from dumping garbage in the area so that we don’t have an outbreak of disease in the city. I also appeal to the people not to dump as MMC has a door-to-door garbage collection system in place. In case the workers employed by the contractor do not pick up waste from any house, people should inform us but refrain from dumping garbage in this area or any other open space,” he pleaded.
