Stressing on the need to inspect the residential rooms inside the factories operating in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, Cuncolim Municipal Council Chairperson Succorina Coutinho has made a fervent plea to the government to depute all the authorities, including the Pollution Control Board, to conduct a surprise inspection of the factories.
“There’s a need to check all the rooms inside the factory premises by conducting a surprise inspection. Every time there’s an inspection, the authorities inform the units one month in advance, giving the owners the time to prepare,” the CMC Chairperson said.
Succorina, who represents the ward adjoining the IDC, said the authorities should keep the civic body in the loop before conducting the inspection. “When things go wrong in the Cuncolim IDC, people question the civic body. Many a time the CMC had dispatched letters to the GSPCB and other authorities, but no reply has been forthcoming,” she lamented.
Succorina wondered what would have been the impact on people if the ammonia gas tank had to explode. She also demanded that the IDC and other authorities maintain a record of labourers working in the estate, while demanding adequate compensation to the deceased.
