Cuncolim council gives nod for repairs of freedom fighters memorial with Yuri’s fund

MARGAO
The first meeting of the Cuncolim Municipal Council held on Tuesday gave its stamp of approval for the project to undertake repairs and maintenance work of freedom fighters memorial near the KTC bus stand with finance from Yuri Alemao and other citizens.

The proposal was passed by a majority of 12-2 votes, with two councillors Videsh Desai and Rahul Desai raising their hands to object to the proposal.

Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Laximan Naik, however, said the Council will send the resolution to the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) after eight days to give opportunity for those opposing the resolution to show that the Council cannot take up the work with finance from Yuri Alemao or any other private citizen.

In fact, the chairperson has said that he is ready to quit office if those opposing the resolution show the relevant rules stating that the Council cannot take funds from citizens to take up the work.

After the meeting, Laximan said that some people are opposing the proposal to undertake repairs and maintenance of the freedom fighters memorial with finance from Yuri Alemao, charging them for indulging in politics. “This is clear politics. They are opposing the proposal to undertake repairs and maintenance of the freedom fighters memorial just because Yuri’s name is mentioned in the agenda. I have told those opposing that they can also get the money from citizens and undertake repairs of other projects,” he said, adding the resolution states that the memorial can be taken up for repairs with finance from Yuri as well as from other citizens.

Laximan said but the Congress leader had volunteered to finance the repairs as the memorial is lying in shambles.
