Coinciding with the 58th founders day, Cuncolim Education Society’s college has planned to start BSc course and also provide external courses to students who had missed opportunities to go in for regular college studies.
The Society has also appointed a new principal for the CES college, Dr Sanjay Desai, and has embarked on an ambitious program to upgrade the college infrastructure on the occasion of the 58 glorious years of the educational institution.
Addressing the media, CES Vice-chairperson Dattakumar Ambe said the single motto of the CES is to provide education to all sections of the society, irrespective of caste, creed and financial position of the students. “The CES was primarily founded to provide higher education to the students hailing from the rural areas. In the last 58 years, more the 10,000 students have graduated from the CES college,” he said.
Ambe further said that through the government RUSA scheme, college has built better infrastructure in last two years. “The college will also get a better administrative building through Sociedade de Gauncaries Cuncolim e Veroda, a local society which always stood behind CES like a rock,” he added.
Narrating the brief history of the educational institution, CES Chairman Dilip Dessai said the Cuncolim Educational Society, formed on 2nd October, 1963, was the brainchild of the village elite group under the leadership of Fr Cromacio Mascarenhas. “The objective of this society was to make education easily accessible to the people of Cuncolim and surrounding villages, especially to the marginalised sections of society,” he added.
He said the founding members rightly realised the role of education in enlightening the citizens and to usher in progress in society. “In 1964, immediately after the formation of the society, the Cuncolim United High School was established. This was followed by the setting up of the Cuncolim United Higher Secondary School, with Arts and Commerce stream in 1981. In June 1986, the Science stream was added, while the vocational courses were introduced in the year 1993,” he added.
Since it was felt that students from Cuncolim and the surrounding areas, after completion of their higher secondary education had to travel to Margao for higher education, the Society laid the foundation stone for the College of Arts and Commerce, in the academic year 1987-88.
Over the years, this institution of higher learning, has contributed immensely to the educational scenario in the state of Goa. The college is permanently affiliated to Goa University and recognised by the UGC under section 2(F) &12(B), of the UGC Act 1956, making it eligible to avail state and central government grants for education under different schemes.
In the year 2012, the college was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), securing a B grade with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)of 2.59. Keeping the vision and mission of the college in mind, the management has initiated a series of measures to take the institution to new heights. This includes a new college block, research centre, PG programmes, more job-oriented courses and better college-industry interface.
