Cuncolim IDC pollution: Shunning accountability, parties engage in political blame game

The air pollution at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate.

MARGAO
When can Cuncolkars look forward to ridding the Cuncolim Industrial Estate of the menace of rampant pollution, posing health hazards to the locals?

Well, air and water pollution at the Cuncolim Industrial estate found a mention during the campaign for the just concluded Lok Sabha election for the South Goa seat. As expected, however, both the Congress and the BJP were engaged in a blame game, pointing accusing fingers at each other over the pollution.

The Congress raised the issue of Cuncolim Industrial Estate pollution and the government’s failure to cap the illegalities at the industrial estate. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant led the counter-attack during his campaign in support of party candidate Pallavi Dempo, demanding to know who was responsible for getting the polluting industries at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, apparently hinting at the previous Congress governments for inviting the polluting industries.

The Chief Minister’s tirade against the Congress was countered on social media, with citizens pointing out that the fish meal units, which have been responsible for devastating the water bodies in and around Cuncolim, were set up post-2012 elections when the BJP returned to power under the leadership of then chief minister, late Manohar Parrikar.
