Questions over the absence of retired Allahabad High Court Chief Justice Ferdino Rebello at the ongoing agitation at Azad Maidan, Panaji, against Section 39-A of the TCP Act have led to strong reactions in his home village of Cuncolim.
Former senior police officer Sammy Tavares, speaking on the platform of Cuncolim First, criticised a video released by a journalist that questioned Rebello’s absence.
He said the video attempted to create doubt among people in Goa.
Tavares also expressed disappointment that Leader of Opposition and Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao had remained silent after the video surfaced.
“We are not asking for suppression of free speech, but leadership requires the courage to defend truth and fairness,” he said.
He added that Justice Rebello is not required to prove his commitment daily.
According to Tavares, Rebello does not owe his presence to any protest and should not be used for political gain.
“If there is criticism, it should be made honestly and directly,” he said.
Tavares said Cuncolim has a history of bravery and resistance but claimed some leaders prefer to attach themselves to ongoing movements rather than lead from the front.
He also condemned the administration’s action against Viresh Borkar, calling such treatment of an elected representative unacceptable in a democracy.
Tavares further said that after retirement, Rebello returned to Goa and took part in social activism, speaking on environmental issues and planning decisions.
