Firmly denying his involvement in any scam or fraud, Curtorim Zilla Panchayat member Moreno Rebello on Wednesday asserted that the development of the open space at Sao Jose de Areal under the ZP fund was proposed after complying with the formalities.
South Goa ZP Chairperson Navnath Naik, who addressed the media along with Moreno, dared those who have termed the development of the open space as a fraud and scam to prove their allegations.
Addressing the media in the presence of the Sarpanchas of Sao Jose de Areal, Vincy Mascarenhas, Rui Menezes (Curtorim) and Agnelo Da Costa (Macazana), besides Curtorim deputy Sarpanch Simon Barretto and panchayat members, Moreno took offense to the allegation made by an Areal villager that the development of the open space is a fraud and a scam.
Referring to the development of the open space, Moreno claimed that he is the power of attorney holder of the open space which is owned by his mother, brother and sister. “Children’s play items, including pavers and a stage was proposed to be developed in the open space. As the owner, I had given NOC to develop the open space. The project estimated to cost Rs 6.20 lakh was tendered after complying with every requirement, including NOC from panchayat,” he said.
Moreno pointed out that the villager sought to misguide the people by saying that the panchayat ought to have taken over the property in question.
“When the same open space was proposed to be developed under the Adivasi fund, the panchayat was required to pay an amount of Rs 1.5 lakh to get the land transferred. By tendering the project, we have saved the money of the panchayat which can be used for the benefit of the public. Instead of appreciating this stand, they have accused me of fraud,” he said.
Areal Sarpanch Vincy Mascarenhas pointed out that the Panchayat has issued the NOC to take up the project to develop the open space and accused certain individuals of trying to defame the ZP member as ZP elections were fast-approaching.
