“All of us are shocked over the burglary and this is the first such incident in our society’s history,” said Gaonkar.
Asked if the incident had shaken the faith of the customers, who had trusted the society to provide safety and security to their valuables, Gaonkar replied in the negative.
“Customers have been banking with our society for the last 20 years and there have never been any complaint from customers so far. Our employees have also had good relations with customers and such an incident was totally unexpected,” said Gaonkar.
To another query on the number of customers who had contacted him after the burglary, Gaonkar replied, “Of the 16 customers whose safe deposit lockers were burgled, only one lady customer met me at the Quepem Police station, when I had gone to give my statement.”
“The lady expressed her annoyance and started blaming the society. Except for this incident, nobody came and accused us of lapses and wrongdoing,” he added.
“The Society has been offering safe locker service to customers for the last five years. Our transactions are transparent and clear,” said Gaonkar.
When contacted, PSI Harish Raut Dessai said statements of about five locals have been recorded so far and added that investigations are in progress.
