With just three days to go for the curtains to fall on the fishing season on May 31, the hustle and bustle has suddenly gone missing from South Goa’s major fishing hub -- the Cutbona
fishing jetty.
A visit to the Cutbona jetty has revealed that while many a vessel has already dropped anchor in River Sal, around 50 per cent of the vessels are presently fishing in the sea with the hope to net a prized last cash of the season.
Inquiries have revealed that around 25 per cent of the vessels have dropped anchor in the river, while the rest of the boats are fishing in the sea. Former president of the Cutbona Boat Owners Union Cipriano Cardozo told The Goan that boats which have ventured out in the sea are all expected to land at the jetty either on May 31 or June 1 -- well on time before the
season ends.
“Boats which have gone out in the sea have moved further due to the conducive weather conditions. The weather was rough yesterday, but has improved today. Many boats have gone into deep seas. The vessels are expected to fish for the next two days and return home well on time,” he said.
A couple of fishing vessels have returned to the Cutbona fishing jetty on Sunday with prized catch of big-sized mackerels, besides tuna fish, while labourers were seen loading ice in other vessels, bracing to leave the jetty to venture out in the sea.
A fleet of outstation trucks lay anchored on the jetty with the hope that the boats will bring tonnes of fish in the next three days.
With many vessels dropping anchor at the jetty, migrant labourers were engaged in pulling the nets to load them in
waiting vehicles.
