Operations at Dabolim Airport have seen a significant decline of 15-20% following the relocation of three international airlines to Manohar International Airport, Mopa. Dabolim Airport Director, Dhanamjay Rao, highlighted the impact, stating that last year the airport managed over 8.4 million passengers, whereas this year's figures have dropped to around 7 million.
Despite the challenges, Rao remains optimistic about the airport's future, expressing expectations of additional flights in the upcoming summer schedule. However, recent developments include Qatar Airways ceasing operations at Dabolim Airport, adding to the list of airlines that have shifted their operations.
Commenting on Qatar Airways' decision, Rao reiterated the airline's autonomy, stating, "Qatar Airways has an operator, and they make their own decisions, which we respect." This exit follows previous departures by Air India and Oman Air.
Rao emphasised the continued operation of Dabolim Airport, highlighting the presence of other international airlines like Air Arabia, Air India Express, and Gulf Air. He noted, "Many airlines prefer to operate from Dabolim airport."
Meanwhile, Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho criticized GMR, accusing them of employing pressure tactics at the central level to redirect flights from Dabolim Airport to MIA, Mopa. Godinho firmly stated, "I won't allow it to happen at any cost. Dabolim is here to stay."
