Locals from Dabolim have voiced concerns as a growing number of fuel tankers have begun parking along the highway between Dabolim and Verna.
Speaking to The Goan, a resident Khawaja Bepari, said parking of fuel tankers has posed a serious danger to motorists along the route.
“These tankers are parked just alongside the highway and create problems for other traffic. We have vehicles speeding on this highway and if someone crashes into these tankers, a major tragedy could take place,” said Bepari.
Social worker Ayas Shaikh said authorities must act on the tankers as part of the highway had already been temporarily converted into a one-way route.
"We have some Railway works going on and already one side of the highway is closed for vehicular traffic. We have only one road that is used by vehicles moving from both sides and these tankers parked here create a dangerous situation.”
“We have around 15-16 tankers parked everyday along the highway and these parked tankers create chaos on this single road used for two-way traffic," said Shaikh.
Shaikh recalled that a young woman had recently lost her life after ramming into a stationary trailer three months ago and added that 3-4 fatal accidents have taken place in the last few months.
“We don't want such incidents to recur and we request tanker owners, police, panchayat and the government to intervene and have these tankers removed from the roadside, to ensure we don't have fatal accidents just because of wrongly parked tankers," said Shaikh.
