Residents of Dandeavaddo in Chinchinim took to the streets on Wednesday to protest against the rising number of road accidents at the junction and the failure of the authorities to streamline traffic at
the place.
The residents have set a one-month deadline on the authorities to resolve the traffic issue or face agitation at the spot. Agitated over the death of a local resident in a road accident at the Dandeavaddo traffic junction earlier this week, the residents assembled at the spot on Wednesday morning to protest against the rising number of accidents.
A resident Brian Fernandes said the authorities should work out a solution to the traffic problem plaguing the junction on a priority. He demanded immediate deployment of traffic wardens to streamline the traffic.
“We are all worried and concerned about the accidents at the junction. We don’t want to see more lives being lost,” he said, adding that the authorities should install signboards 40 meters ahead of the rumblers at the junction.
Another resident Sharmila Gracias pointed out that if the authorities cannot erect speed-breakers on the highway, these can come up on the internal roads connecting it.
A resident Joe Dias told the media that he had taken up the matter with South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha with a request to install traffic signals at the Dandeavaddo junction.
He pointed out that the Chinchinim panchayat had adopted resolutions in favour of the traffic signals, but there was no action from the government authorities.
Joe informed that the MP has briefed the District Collector Ajit Roy on the issue and has agreed to sanction funds for the traffic signals. “The Collector has told the MP that he has issued instructions to the police to deploy policemen to man the Dandeavaddo traffic junction until further orders,” he added.
