The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has come under the scanner of Margao Municipal Council over the delay in auctioning the scrapped Municipal vehicles posing as an eyesore and a breeding site for vector borne disease.

For, it’s now months since the MMC had knocked the doors of the GWMC for the auctioning of the scrapped vehicles lying at the MMC garage at Old market, but in vain.

Around nine Municipal vehicles, including night soil tankers and garbage vehicles are lying at the Old market garage over the last several months.

MMC officials have claimed that they had sent a proposal to the GWMC to auction the scrapped vehicles as per the government notification mandating all government and semi-government bodies to auction the scrapped vehicles through the GWMC.

GWMC officials, on the other hand, pointed out that the Corporation had floated a tender to auction MMC’s scrapped vehicles, but the process could not be taken to the logical conclusion due to a single bidder.

“Rules mandate re-auctioning when there is a single bidder for an auction. In the instant case, the Corporation had to float the tender thrice to get more than one bidder, but in vain. The Corporation has now decided to award the tender to the lone bidder but after obtaining sanction from the government”, a GWMC official informed.

Of the nine MMC scrapped vehicles, the GWMC has tendered for auction 4-5 vehicles. MMC officials say the Civic body will write to the Corporation to auction the remaining vehicles at the earliest since the vehicles not only poses an eyesore, but is occupying space at the old market garage.
