Demand for statue of Francis D’Souza in Mapusa

The Akhil Goa Mahasangh Hitawardhak Mandal plans to install the statue of former deputy chief minister late Francis (Babush) D’Souza in Mapusa and has sought permission from the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC).  

The Mandal has suggested six sites to install the statue and they include the garden near the Court, near Alankar theatre, near St Xavier’s College, near Sai Baba temple at Cunchelim, Kamat Garden at Dattawadi and Dr Lohia Garden.  

The proposal has been signed by the Mandal President Siddhesh Parwar, secretary Mahadev Kamble, treasurer Rajesh Hallikar, joint secretary Chandrakant Talwar, joint treasurer Dilip Mhapskar, member Prakash Pujari and Anand Ayvale.  

Francis D’Souza died on February 14, 2019. He became MLA for the first time in 1999 on the Goa Rajiv Congress ticket. He later won elections on the BJP ticket in 2007, 2012 and 2017. Prior to that, he was elected as councillor in the Mapusa Municipal Council in 1985 and went on to become the MMC chairperson.
