Former Bironde-Sattari sarpanch Udai Singh Rane has demanded that the government include the name of his grandfather Dada Rane in the list of freedom fighters.
Speaking to The Goan, Udai Singh Rane said Dada Rane had worked with freedom fighter Deepaji Rane during the first revolt against the Portuguese rule in 1952 at Nanus-Sattari fort.
“Dada Rane fought for the people of Sattari and Goa against Portuguese rule. My grandfather's name is mentioned in history books, but unfortunately Dada's name is not included in the list of freedom fighters.”
“My family has already submitted a claim to the government in this matter demanding to classify Dada as a freedom fighter and to get the government's assistance to erect a statue of Dada Rane at Advoi junction, besides other benefits from the government,” he said.
“We family members never got any benefit from government schemes even though our grandfather was a freedom fighter. We therefore demand that Dada Rane's name be included in the list of freedom fighters,” demanded Udai Singh.
Udai Singh Rane and his family members also informed that they are planning to name the street/road leading to his ancestor's house, where Dada Rane lived at Advoi-Sattari as 'Dada Rane Street/Marg'.
The family said a resolution regarding naming the road will be proposed during the next Gram Sabha.
Meanwhile, Dada Rane's residence, which is about 160 years old, still exists at Advoi and his family claims that some old utensils, arms and ammunition which were used during the time are still kept intact in the house.
