Demarcation exercise by GSUDA at Sonsodo burial ground questioned

Officials accused of not acting in a transparent manner

MARGAO

The intervenor in the Public Interest Litigation in the High Court in respect of the Sonsodo burial ground, Blaze Mota has questioned the so-called demarcation exercise conducted by the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) at the acquired land at Sonsodo on Friday as claimed by the Margao Municipal Council (MMC).

Mota said he would draw attention of the High Court to the purported demarcation conducted by the GSUDA officials, saying demarcation exercises are conducted in an open and transparent manner and not in the sly.

“I do not find truth in the claim made by the MMC to the media that the demarcation of the Sonsodo burial ground land was carried out and completed by GSUDA on Friday morning. But, if the claim is true, then I will draw the attention of the High Court to the demarcation”, he said.

For, Mota said that demarcation exercises are always carried out by intimating the land owners of surrounding the property in question. “If the GSUDA has completed the exercise as claimed by the MMC officials, this only goes to show they have something to hide and the officials are not acting in a transparent manner,” he said.

He added: “We fail to understand the claim made by the MMC. May be they have made a claim to misguide the people”.

Mota said the Parishioners of Raia had assembled at Sonsodo on Friday since the GSUDA was scheduled to conduct demarcation of the acquired property admeasuring 30,000 square meters.

“Our contention is that there is no access road for the acquired property. Hence, it was all the more incumbent on GSUDA or the MMC to carry out the demarcation by intimating the people and in a transparent manner,” he said.

Mota pointed out that in his intervention application he has prayed before the High Court to allot the acquired land for the burial grounds for all the three communities.

“A glance at the MMC resolution, the basis on which the land at Sonsodo was acquired by the Civic body, shows that the civic body had adopted the resolution for the land acquisition with the objective to allot the acquired land for the three communities,” he said.
