PANAJI:
The demolition of the old market building by the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) had got stalled for the last couple of days owing to resistance from eviction by a handful of traders operating shops in the periphery of the edifice.
However after consultations with these traders, the demolition work resumed late Tuesday evening.
Sources said, around four to five traders operating their shops from an adjacent, tile-roofed ground floor building had raised objections to the CCP Commissioner Clen Madeira directing them to evict from their shops and remove all their belongings. The notice was issued to them last week.
In verbal discussions with Madeira, some of these traders questioned the directive to vacate their shops for 30 days, claiming their daily livelihood will be affected.
Madeira, however, shot down their request to compensate them for the loss of business and later served them an 'order' warning that the CCP would itself remove all the belongings if they didn't do so on their own.
The traders then relented and the CCP resumed demolishing the old building from where it had evicted the meat traders and is yet to find alternative space for them as directed by the Bombay High Court at Goa, where the hearing of the traders' plea is ongoing.

Tax bldg for temporary office

The search for a premises to house its administrative office temporarily just prolonged with the State government rejecting its request for the old PWD edifice at Patto, the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) is now eyeing the ground-plus one building which once housed the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court and more recently the State Commercial Taxes Department along the city"s MG Road.
A top official said, the communique from the State government has now forced the CCP to work on housing the temporary office at the former Commercial Tax building.
The CCP has been on the lookout for space to house its offices as it plans to build a new administrative building for itself at its current address. Work on the project, housing a 'town hall', commercial spaces, adequate parking facilities and sundry other facilities, was inaugurated over a year ago but beyond demolishing a small portion not much progress has happened on the ground.
