Design of Aldona-Calvim bridge bags 3rd place

The ‘Construction of Steel Bridge connecting Aldona-Calvim’ project taken up by Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) was awarded the third place at the national competition for Professionals on Structured Steel Design and Construction organized by Institute for Steel Development and Growth (INSDAG), a non-profit making member based organization established by the Government of India (Ministry of Steel) and the major steel producers of the country.

Consultants M/s Madhav Kamat and Associates shared the third place with Sterling Engineering Consultancy Services Pvt Ltd for the design of the Sunshine Tower in Mumbai. Larsen & Toubro Limited bagged the first place for the design of the Terminal 2 (T2) in Mumbai, while Mistry Architects won the second place for the design of the Agastya Auditorium block constructed in Andhra Pradesh.
Commenting on the achievement, Dr Pramod Sawant, Chairman GSIDC stated, “We are delighted to hear that Madhav Kamat and Associates have bagged this prestigious award for the design of the Aldona-Calvim Bridge and congratulate them on this significant achievement. Awards such as these recognise and acknowledge the efforts of the entire team who work towards creating award winning architectural designs. GSIDC will continue to play an important part in building architectural designs and infrastructure.”
The bridge has been specially designed conforming to the IRC standards.
Total length of the bridge at Aldona-Calvim is 494 mts. The bridge consists of two lanes with 7.5 carriageway width and wide footpaths on either side. The navigational span of the bridge is around 120 mts. The navigational span of the bridge ensures that the foundations are on the river banks and there are no obstructions to the water flow and the navigational traffic in the river.
The substructure of the bridge comprises of RCC plate piers with RCC pier caps with the pedestals. The superstructure of the bridge comprises of the composite steel construction. RCC deck is supported on steel work spanning between piers. The steel work includes the plate girders for 34 mts span. The arch of the bridge comprises of high strength stainless steel rods. To improve the riding quality minimum numbers of expansion joints are provided. The entire lighting of the bridge has been carried out with high quality LED fittings.
