“The fact that a central government department has managed to get 95 per cent of its staff as being Goan, is an achievement in itself. But the biggest challenge the department faces today is to remain updated in today’s day. With email and SMS, it becomes necessary, especially in the case of the Post to find its significance,” he said.
He also urged staff members to put added efforts to work in smaller villages adding that it needed to work at the pace of the private sector.
The central government department has 258 Post offices in the State with four head departments and recently introduced core banking at 101 Post offices around the State with four ATM’s at Panaji, Margao, Ponda and Mapusa respectively.
Speaking to the gathering at the ceremony, Postmaster General (Goa Region) Vinod Kumar Verma said the department had for the year 2015-16, opened 4 lakh accounts under the Post Office Savings scheme and had brought in business worth Rs 30 crore as part of the Postal Life insurance scheme.
Panaji Mayor, Surendra Furtado who was also a guest for the function praised the efforts of the department especially with the setting up of the Post Office in Miramar but raised questions about the money remittance service issue at Miramar.
“The Post Office at Miramar has helped many of the senior citizens in the area. But there have been instances where if someone wants to en cash a check, the person is asked to keep the documents and collect the money the next day,” he said adding that the department ought to fix the issue.
Employees from across the State were awarded for their work with the department and were awarded with trophies and certificates for their commendable work. Also in attendance was Senior Superintendent Post Office (Goa Region) Archana Gopinath.
