Mapusa Council agree to build
multi-level parking near govt complex

In a significant decision which will help reduce parking problem in town, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has resolved to build multi-level car parking facility near the government complex at Morod, Mapusa.
In another decision, the council passed a resolution to fix GPS system to all municipal council utility vehicles.
The council decided to go for multi-level parking in the open space just after the compound wall of the government complex at Morod.
“Mapusa has been facing chaotic scenes due to lack of parking space. A lot of people coming to the market have been parking vehicles in the government complex, denying opportunity to those who come for official work. The open space beyond the government complex is ideal for building a parking facility,” said MMC Chairperson Sandeep Falari.
He further stated that since the land concerned belonged to the revenue department, the local MLA, who is also a revenue minister would help the council to obtain the place.
The council gave an unanimous sanction to the decision in the interest of public.
In another decision which could help in keeping track of municipal vehicles and reducing fuel cost, the council decided to fix GPS system to all the utility vehicles of the civic body.
“Many times there’s no accountability of where the vehicles are heading to and for how long. GPS system will help us to track down the location of the vehicle. The system will also help us to keep tab on fuel consumption,” the chairperson said.
In another ruling the council decided to defer its proposal to eliminate house numbers of those houses which have either been demolished or in whose place buildings have come up.
Putting the proposal before the council, the chairperson said there are many such house numbers where houses don’t exist anymore.
He said in the books of account, the house tax keeps multiplying every year against such house numbers. He also said some people could misuse the numbers by erecting temporary shelters against the house numbers.
Senior councillor, Ryan Braganza said many such people may have not paid house tax for many years and who may have demolished the house just a couple of years back.
“Many people may escape from paying arrears if such house numbers are eliminated in one sweeping move. Let the municipal council investigate and find out,” Braganza suggested.
Councillor, Sanjay Mishal also objected to the proposal and sought more time to study the matter in detail.
Former chairperson and present councillor, Sudhir Kandolkar however, thought that it would be better to get rid of such house numbers.
The chairperson decided to defer the matter to next council meeting but in the meantime asked the councillors to study and look into such cases in each of their wards.
The council decided to extend financial assistance to a Mapusa resident, who recently lost all his belongings in fire incident. Making an exception to the case, the council decided to extend financial benefit to the person to the tune of Rs 25,000.

MMC grants NoC for work that
was already tendered to GSUDA

It may not be a case of double tendering but all the same it’s about work that was tendered to one agency and now permission is given to a another entity for part of the same work.
On Friday, Mapusa Municipal Council has given a go ahead to a private company to carry out beautification work of Gandhi Chowk as part of the company’s CSR activity.
The council resolved to give permission to Cosme Costa and Associates to take up beautification work of Gandhi Chowk.
“Cosme Costa and Associates has agreed to beautify the Gandhi Chowk and the area around it to the tune of Rs 15 lakh,” Sandeep Falari, Chairperson, Mapusa Municipal Council said.
The Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) had taken up the development and beautification of entry point of Mapusa town up to Khorlim, which included beautification of Gandhi Chowk.
The entire work was to be completed at an estimated cost of Rs 14.88 crore which also included work on construction of retaining wall near Milagres Church.
The work was contracted to M/s M Venkata Rao Infra Projects Pvt Ltd, Porvorim.
“The work on the beautification of entry point to Mapusa up to Khorlim was taken up by GSUDA and it included beautification of Gandhi Chowk and the area housing a Holy Cross opposite to it,” said Jagdish Hosmani, Chief Project Officer, GSUDA.
GSUDA’s beautification and several other works in the town have been going at a snail’s pace. The beautification of the work had begun in June 2014 and was expected to complete by December 2015.
“We encountered a number of unrelated problems while executing the work. There are many service lines like that of PWD and electricity around the Gandhi Chowk and that’s why work had slowed down,” Hosmani admitted.
