Sanvordem MLA Ganesh Gaonkar on Friday inaugurated the desilting work of the Dudhsagar River in Collem.
The desilting work, which began at Shigao ward of Collem village, has been undertaken to avoid flooding of the river, as had been witnessed last year and had led to flooding of plantations, fields and houses.
Gaonkar appreciated the desilting operations being undertaken by the Water Resources Department.
The desilting operation is mainly needed near the Bhandaras, where lot of unwanted material and logs accumulate and block the free flow of water during monsoon.
