Expressing concern over the rise in goondaism in his backyard, Calagute MLA Michael Lobo said crime detection rate of Goa Police was indeed high but crimes were also increasing quite sharply which was a matter of concern.
Lobo also said that small-time goons are graduating into criminal gangs who are involved in extortion rackets and this has to be stopped before it goes out of hand.
“We accept that the detection rate of Goa Police is high but crime also is increasing at a very high rate. That should not happen. A message should go that Goa Police is very strict and will not tolerate such crimes. The Goa Police needs to take responsibility,” Lobo said.
The Calangute MLA was speaking to journalists after holding discussion with Mapusa DySP Jivba Dalvi and Anjuna PI Prashal Desai on the progress of the investigation in the recent stabbing of a Calangute youth at Arpora-Nagoa.
Lobo said a lot of villagers had come to his house expressing concern over the rising law and order problem and demanding tough action against the anti-social elements.
“The recent stabbing attack brings bad name for Goa. Strong action should be taken against people involved in such organised crime. If need be, externment proceedings should be moved against such people and they should not get bail,” he said.
He also said these anti-social elements will not have direct blessings from the police but the loopholes in the law were a matter of concern.
“These are habitual offenders. They sit in the jail for six to eight months and after getting released, commit crimes again. Old records of such criminals should be checked. They should not get bail easily,” he said.
