Following a series of accidents on the Karmalghat section of the NH66, the government has sanctioned funds to acquire land for the four-lane road and the PWD (Highway) has now sought permission from the forest department to widen the road along a sharp and treacherous Curve on Karmalghat section.
In a letter to the Dy Conservator of Forests, the PWD (Highway) assistant engineer stated that there exists a very sharp curve at Karmalghat which requires urgent improvement from road safety point of view.
“The curve is very narrow on the slope without any side shoulders. The metal crash-barriers provided earlier are damaged and cannot be reinstalled within the available land,” stated the PWD.
Justifying the request, PWD further informed the forest department that the spot is prone to accidents and is continuously highlighted in print and electronic media for improvements of the
sharp curve.
In road safety meetings, it has also been suggested to improve this location to avoid any untoward incidents, while the Dy Collector (LA), Margao has also asked to take preventive measures at the spot and Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar has also sought to take up the works on
top priority.
PWD (Highway) has also sought a Forest NOC to utilise forest land and to fell six trees for improvements of the sharp curve at Karmalghat.
The Karmalghat section of the NH66 has been witness to several mishaps and a number of heavy vehicles have either rammed into the crash-barriers or have been stuck in a roadside trench at a sharp curve, making it very dangerous to motorists.
