The mamlatdar's show cause notice to a Mapusa-based builder Tarak Arolkar for alleged landfilling and illegal constructions has blown the lid off landfilling in several other properties in the vicinity that are being developed in similar low-lying area on the banks of the Chapora river.
Pernem Deputy Collector Sudhir Kerkar has sought for a fresh report on the status of landfilling in Dhargal expressing his dissatisfaction with the earlier report of the mamlatdar who filed a limited report while omitting issues of land-filling both within Survey No. 177/1 as well as in the vicinity.
It may be recalled that based on a report of the Pernem mamlatdar, the Pernem Deputy Collector had issued directions to Mapusa-based builder Tarak Arolkar and his ‘agents' to "stop henceforth the construction work in the property surveyed under Survey No. 177/1 for Dhargal village and to restore the land to its original use ie. agriculture."
In the vicinity of Tarak's alleged misadventure, a similar suspicious activity of land-filling and construction is going on with reports that the land is being cleared to make way for high-end residential projects.
Earlier Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardesai while speaking in the ongoing session of the Goa Legislative Assembly assured a thorough probe and action into the alleged illegal conversions of agricultural land resulting in CRZ violations in Mandrem constituency.
The assurance came in after Mandrem MLA Dayanand Sopte pointed out that huge areas of agricultural land have been illegally converted in the coastal belt of Mandrem, resulting in CRZ violations.
"We have not converted any land other than (under section) 16 A, which concerns government projects. If the MLA feels that any project in his constituency has been granted technical clearance wrongly, we are ready to review it. In fact, I am ready to personally go and inspect it. We are ready to investigate into the project. You place all the details on the floor of the House," Sardesai said while refusing to concede to the opposition's demand that there will be a House committee to probe these allegations.
Vijai's contention was that the issues were restricted to Mandrem constituency as highlighted by the MLA Dayanand Sopte.
The reality however, is that CRZ violations and landfilling are a bane across coastal talukas. Will the Chief Minister, the Revenue Minister and TCP minister gear up to act?
