MARGAO
In the eye of a political storm over reports on his imminent exit from the Congress to join the BJP, seven-time Margao MLA Digambar Kamat on Saturday thundered that he is only answerable to the people of Margao and no one else.
He further went on to say that Digambar will be there as long as Madgavkars want him to represent them in politics.
“I have made clear and am making clear again that I am answerable to the people of Margao. Speculations and videos are doing the rounds that I am the Captain and a vice-captain. Neither do I care for these speculation and videos nor will I fall in the trap. As long as the people of Margao want me, Digambar will be there”, he told the media on the sidelines of a Vanmahotsava program organised the Margao MLA near the Margao fire station on Saturday.
Clearing the air over suspicions that he is leading the rebel group in order to embrace the ruling BJP, Kamat said speculations that he would return to the BJP has been doing the rounds in political circles for the last 10 years. “When I had gone to Delhi, there were reports that I was in the BJP office, even a senior Delhi-based video journalist had called me to find out when I was addressing the media at the BJP headquarters. I told him that I have landed at Dabolim, but again there were speculations whether I am going to the Raj Bhavan”.
He added: “All these speculations do not matter to me. I do not get disturbed by these speculations. Do the media feel that I am disturbed? Power or no power, it does not make any difference to Digambar Kamat. I am ultimately answerable to the people of Margao. As long as I enjoy the support of the people of Margao, I don’t care for these speculations”.
His close aide and Margao Municipal Councilor Damu Shirodkar intervened by saying that workers have given a free hand to the Margao MLA to take whatever decision he deems fit.
On the Sunday episode, wherein Congress MLAs were seen at his bungalow at Aquem, Kamat said the MLAs had come home for lunch, demanding to know whether he can drive them away. “On that day, I did not go to Panjim the whole day and I was at home”, he said, while again reiterating that he is only answerable to the people of Margao and no one else.
