Don’t simply raise Brexit concerns, says Dr Mesquita

Asserting that politicians should stop raising a hue and cry over the future of Goan Portuguese passport holders in the UK post-Brexit verdict, Goa NRI Commissioner Dr Wilfred Mesquita on Tuesday said that Goans (Portuguese passport holders) settled in Britain over the years need not worry at all since their interests will be protected by the Portuguese government’s arrangement with its UK counterparts.

He, however, agreed those Goans willing to migrate to the UK with Portuguese passports will now face problems post-Brexit, adding that those planning to go to UK will need visas from the British government to enter the country.
The NRI Commissioner told the Goan during his visit to the city here on Tuesday that some people are out to show that they are more Popish than the Pope by showing their concern for Goans with Portuguese passports in the UK. “My friends in the Congress and Independent MLA Vijai Sardesai should know that Goans in the UK need not worry post-Brexit. Only those who had plans to travel to UK with Portuguese passports will now need to obtain visa for entering the country like any other ordinary citizen,” he said.
Replying to a question, he said the Portuguese government has already asked its citizens, including Goans with the country’s passports, to contact and register themselves with its embassy or consulate in the UK to take up their cause with the British government for UK citizenship after five years.
To another question, Dr Mesquita conceded that Goans settled in the UK with Portuguese passports may loose health insurance, besides doles for the aged.

MAPUSA:  Panjikar accused Kejriwal for not functioning as a diplomatic chief minister of Delhi.  “Instead of getting work done through dialogues, he prefers only to abuse and accuse the Government of India and the Prime Minister just for publicity, as he has failed to deliver as a good chief minister of AAP,” Panjikar said.  Stressing that educated people of Goa would not get carried away with his “nautankibaj” style of politics, the North Goa…
