Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda, is the only college this year to fill up seats in all of the engineering streams it offers, according to records obtained from the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) on Thursday.
The college, which started less than a decade ago, has taken in students to its maximum capacity of 60 seats in the four streams “ Computer, Mechanical, Electronics and Telecommunications (ETC) and Civil.
On the other hand, the otherwise most sought after college after the Government Engineering College (GEC), i.e. Padre Conceicao College of Engineering, Verna, this year saw seats in two of its four streams, unfilled.
While the computer and mechanical streams had takers for all 60 seats in each stream, there were still 14 seats vacant in ETC, and 12 seats vacant in IT after the third and final round of centralised admission which concluded earlier this month.
At Goa Engineering College (GEC), while six of its seven streams got its full intake, a large dip was witnessed in the number of students opting for mining.
While there were 20 takers for mining out of the 32 seats offered for the last academic year (2017-18), this year only nine seats are filled which means that 23 of the 32 seats are vacant.
Agnel Institute of Technology and Design (AITD) in Assagao had takers for all 60 seats in computer engineering, but three seats were vacant in the mechanical stream and 26 seats had no takers in the electronics and communications stream, informed official sources at the DTE.
Shree Rayeshwar Institute of Engineering and Information Technology (SRIEIT), Shiroda, had the least takers with more half the seats going vacant: 35 vacancies in ETC, 36 in IT, and 30 in computers.
