MARGAO
Congress leaders from South Goa have warned the government that the party will rally behind the people of the district to oppose the Sunburn festival in South Goa.

Attired in black clothes to send a signal to the government it would be a black day in the history of South Goa the day if the government bulldozes its way by shifting the festival to South Goa, the Congress has said the party will not allow the festival to take place in South Goa.

South Goa district committee president Savio D’Silva reminded that South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes has given a call to the people of South Goa to wear boxing gloves to oppose the festival, adding that the party leaders and workers from the district will hit the ground if the government dares hold the festival in down South.

Party leader Moreno Rebello directed his ire at Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, heading the Industrial Development Corporation as its Chairman. He pointed out that gram sabha members of Curtorim panchayat had on Sunday sought clarity from Reginaldo on plans to hold Sunburn at the IDC-acquired land at Quittol, but the IDC Chairman was non-committal. “We would like to warn Reginaldo that the people of South Goa will not allow him along with the BJP to destroy South Goa,” Moreno added.

Congress leader Olensio Simoes warned the government against taking any steps to introduce drug culture in South Goa. “Goa has achieved notoriety as the drug capital of the country. We do not want the State to be turned into a sin city. We have to protect the interests of the people and the youth of Goa,” he added.
