Around four more apartments in Rayesh Housing Society at Marlem Fatorda were left damaged following the collapse of a retaining wall due to a landslide.
Two days after the retaining wall collapse had left three apartments damaged on July 16, residents woke up in the wee hours of Thursday after stones and debris entered their apartments following the fresh landslide and collapse of the retaining wall.
Beleaguered residents rushed out of the apartments after a loud sound woke them up at around 4.15 am on Thursday and they found debris inside their homes following the collapse.
Margao fire brigade led by Fire Officer Gil D’Sa rushed to the spot, the second time in two days, to take stock of the situation. The fire personnel found a huge Jamun tree resting on the building while a couple of trees had also come down during the landslide and collapse of the retaining wall.
The Fire Officer later told the media that he had suggested to the district disaster management officials to requisition a crane to remove the jamun tree resting on the building. Any attempt to pull down the tree without a crane and heavy machinery may turn counter-productive and cause further damage to the building, he said. Gill said around 5-6 apartments might have been damaged in the collapse of the retaining wall and the landslide.
President of the Rayesh Housing Society Ramdas Kachik said though the society had lodged a complaint with the district collector and the Margao Municipal Council to repair the retaining wall, no action had been initiated.
An apartment owner Krishna Vasu Naik told the media that Thursday’s incident occurred at around 4.15 am in the morning when the debris entered the apartments after a loud sound. “We all rushed out of the building before calling the authorities,” he said.
