Speaking to The Goan, Sanvordem Sarpanch Sanjay Naik said garbage is dumped in village areas in the wee hours, making it difficult to penalise the offenders. “Some people dump garbage in open spaces, despite warning and erection of signboards. In many parts the village looks ugly,” said Naik. It may be recalled that the panchayat in December 2015 had decided to erect signboards in various places, instructing people not to litter solid waste, while also deciding to impose Rs 1,000 fine on those found dumping garbage. The panchayat had suggested these measures to tackle the tackle the problem in various parts, including near the Sanvordem bridge and the panchayat ghar. “The panchayat has been conducting door-to-door garbage collection. We collect only solid waste from houses. Many locals are concerned about the issue, but some are not bothered about the importance of solid waste management and this leads to dumping of garbage in the open,” said Naik. Naik was then reminded that the panchayat had plans to erect garbage-deterrent signboards three months ago, while also deciding to impose a Rs 1000 fine on those found dumping garbage. “The Panchayat has prepared signboards which will be erected in various locations in Sanvordem village within the next two days. We will start imposing fine once the signboards are erected,” he added. Asked about plans for a mini solid waste composting unit for the panachayat at a cost of Rs 5 lakh, Naik replied: “The plan was stalled as it was financially not feasible. We will meet the chairman of Goa State Pollution Control Board next week to discuss and find a solution to the garbage issue.”
