With the ruling BJP leadership mum on Goa Forward Party supremo Vijai Sardesai's demand to install a statue of Dr Jack Sequeira in the Goa Assembly complex and the MGP undecided on its stand on the contentious issue, the proposal has found complete favour from a different quarter - the opposition Congress party.
In fact, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Shantaram Naik told The Goan on Monday that the Congress party is totally in favour of the TCP Minister's demand for the installation
of Dr Jack Sequeira's statue in the Legislative Assembly complex. "There are no two opinions on the stand of the Congress party on Dr Jack Sequeira's statue. The Congress party supports the demand made by the TCP Minister," Shantaram said.
When asked whether the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) will support any resolution tabled by the Goa Forward Party in the Legislative Assembly demanding installation of Dr Jack Sequeira's statue in the Assembly complex, the GPCC president said it may not be fair on his part to comment on a question falling within the domain of the legislative party. He, however, hastened to add that the Congress Legislature Party should support such a resolution tabled in the House in support of Dr Jack Sequeira's statue.
When asked whether there can be a re-alignment of political forces on the question of the installation of Dr Sequeira's statue in the Assembly, Shantaram shot back, "I would not like to comment on the question. It is too early to say anything."
Sources in the GPCC, however, demanded to know whether Goa Forward Party supremo and TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai would dare table a resolution in the Assembly demanding installation of Dr Jack Sequeira's statue in the Assembly complex without consulting the alliance partners, including the BJP and the Congress. In fact, a Congress party leader contended that though the odds seemed to be in favour of the resolution, considering that it receives the backing of the Congress and some Independents, the question is whether the TCP Minister will dare table such a resolution in the Assembly without consulting the Chief Minister and the alliance partners.
The Chief Minister has so far not commented on the TCP Minister and Goa Forward Party's demand for the installation of Dr Sequeira's statue and inclusion of the historic Opinion Poll in the school curriculum. On the other hand, the MGP has steered clear of the controversy by insisting that the issue hasn't been deliberated at the party's executive committee meeting, with PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar even saying that the party will prefer to discuss the issue with the Chief Minister as well the TCP Minister before unveiling the party's stand on the contentious issue.
