VALPOI

The filth in the rivers and streams flowing through the Valpoi municipal area has not been cleaned yet. Due to this, if the monsoon starts, there is a possibility that water mixed with dirt and garbage will enter the Mhadei river bed. This is likely to endanger the biodiversity and this can create serious consequences. The irrigation department along with the municipality have been accused of neglecting the cleaning of the streams and rivers flowing through municipal area.

A river flows through the Masorde area of Valpoi Municipality. This river is currently filled with a huge amount of garbage. Therefore, it is very important to clear this garbage before the monsoons. If the monsoon starts, there is a possibility that along with the rainfall, plastic and other forms of waste will go into the Mhadei river bed. If that happens, there is a possibility that there will be a lot of pollution  and it will affect the biodiversity.

Meanwhile, a large amount of garbage was dumped at the Ganapati visarjan site in Masorde. Dry wood, plastic bottles and other forms of garbage are thrown in the open. The municipality has provided garbage bins but many people throw the waste in the river bed.

Meanwhile, the corporator of this area Vinod Haldankarexplained that it is necessary to clean the garbage in this area first. Because these areas are filled with a large amount of garbage. Many times, garbage prevention notice boards were put up at these places. At present, it is clear that there is a large amount of waste in the water. It is difficult to clean the waste in the river bed unless the water flow in this area is cleared. It is filled with a large number of bottles. Therefore, Haldankar has expressed the possibility of accidents happening at this place during Ganpati immersion. The municipality has given instructions in this regard to the officials of the local irrigation department. However, Haldankar expressed his displeasure as the drains have not been cleaned till now and has demanded that attention be paid to this matter.

The drain in Ward No 9 of the municipal area is also polluted. Many house owners are allowing household waste and sewage flow into sewers. Due to this, the drains are getting polluted through these sewers. At present, a large amount of dirt is accumulated in these drains. If it starts raining, along with the impact of rain, there is a possibility that this polluting dirt will go into the Mhadei river bed and this may also create a threat to the river bed. Last year too, the work of cleaning the drains was taken up when the monsoon was approaching. At present, there is a tug-of-war between the municipality and the irrigation department. Citizens are demanding that the municipality should clean the drains coming into the municipal area. It has now been proven that the municipality is shifting its responsibility to the irrigation department.
