Drama prevailed over the appointment of president and the new committee members of the Mormugao Nagrik Shigmotsav Samiti (MNSS), before Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar was finally elected as president to head the Shigmotsav celebrations in the port town for this year.

The meeting at Ravindra Bhavan was chaired by Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Leo Rodrigues, who announced Salkar as the president after a large crowd of Salkar’s supporters began demanding that Salkar be made the president, even as other names like that of Prakash Gawas, Nilima Naik and Pratap Gaonkar surfaced for the candidature of the MNSS president.

There was utter chaos as the previous committee began giving the statement of accounts of MNSS and there were allegations and counter-allegations over the expenditure, with some members present demanding a new committee led by a new president.

Amid the chaos, the members began suggesting the names of the candidates for the post of the MNSS president and hell broke loose after the Presiding Officer based on the large public demand announced Salkar as the MNSS president.

The announcement did not go well with certain leaders who alleged that Rodrigues had not followed the rules and some alleged that Salkar needed to attend the meeting for a minimum of five years.

Former MMC Chairperson Nandadeep Raut and former MMC Vice Chairperson Reema Sonurlekar said Salkar must not be appointed president as he had not attended the meeting for the last five years.

However, group supporting Salkar said the Vasco MLA had attended the meeting and was made the president of MNSS last year but Salkar had given up his post for the sake of a senior member.

There was utter chaos after Presiding Officer Leo Rodrigues called off the meeting after announcing Salkar as the president and left the hall without appointing the other members of the new MNSS committee.

Speaking to reporters, Salkar said the Shigmo meeting usually witnesses chaos over selection of a new committee because everyone wants to be a part of the committee.
