A huge fire in an area close to the Zuari Indian Oil Tanking Limited (ZIOTL) at Sancoale on Thursday afternoon, sparked off a panic after a video of the incident went viral on social media.
The smoke was so thick that it could be seen from some distance, leading many to assume that the ZIOTL tanks had caught fire. Many people alerted the fire station to report the fire.
When contacted, a source in ZIOTL confirmed that the fire was not in the company but on dry grass outside and away from the company.
"There was panic and we too received several calls to enquire about the incident. The video created further panic across the State. The fire took place on dry grass and it was our fire tenders that reached the site first and doused the fire.”
“With people calling the fire services, fire brigades from the Vasco fire station also arrived at the site and our fire tenders helped them in completely extinguishing the fire. We also had the Verna police inspector arrive at our terminal and he also confirmed there was no fire incident in the ZIOTL terminal," said the source.
