MARGAO
The Margao Municipal Council came under the public scanner yet again, this time on the lens of the alert villagers of Sao Jose de Areal.
Reason: Dry waste transported by the Margao Municipality to the baling centre at the Nessai Industrial Estate has earned ire from Areal villagers on the grounds that the waste is being transported without proper covering of the garbage.
The MMC has been allotted a shed at the Nessai Industrial Estate in Areal village for the purpose of baling of the dry plastic waste. The villagers, however, have found the MMC transporting the dry waste in open trucks posing nuisance to the local villagers.
An agitated social activist Freddy Travasso called up Margao Municipal Chairperson Damu Shirodkar over the phone to complain of waste being transported in open trucks to the Nessai Industrial Estate. He warned the MMC Chairperson that the villagers would be left with no option than to stop the trucks carrying Margao waste to the Nessai Industrial Estate if the trucks are not covered properly with tarpaulin.
Conceding that the MMC is required to transport the waste in closed vehicles, the MMC Chairperson assured Travasso that he would immediately send instructions to the concerned officials to take abundant precautions, including covering the vehicles with tarpaulin while transporting the waste.
Incidentally, a MMC vehicle drafted for transportation of the city dry waste to Areal broke down on the road at Areal, indicating that old vehicles have been deployed for transporting waste to the neighbouring village.
The ill-fated vehicle was later towed away by another vehicle, even as the villagers warned that the MMC should deploy vehicles in working condition so that the same does not pose nuisance to the local villagers.
