Prayers followed by greetings and celebrations marked Eid-ul-Fitr festival in the port town on Thursday.
Muslims first visited mosques in the morning to offer Namaz and later visited friends and family members to exchange greetings. Portions of biryani and meat along with a sweet kheer were also exchanged on the occasion.
Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar graced the occasion by visiting the Shafi Masjid at Baina and extended his wishes to the community.
Keeping in mind the Lok Sabha elections and previous clashes between religious groups, police teams were present at strategic locations to avoid any untoward incident and to maintain law and order.
Speaking to reporters, former GPCC minority chairman Nazir Khan appealed to all people to maintain peace and harmony during the festival.
"We have offered prayers to Allah the Almighty to spread the peace across the world and we also appeal all our Hindu, Christian and members of other religions to unite to celebrate festivals together so as to spread peace and maintain the communal harmony in Goa," said Khan.
Added social worker Rahil Khan: “We have seen that a large number of people have gathered at the Masjid to offer prayers and we are very happy today as we hug and greet each other. our Hindu friends are also around to wish us and this proves that we have always been united in Vasco.”
“We have been given this great opportunity by God to celebrate festivals together and such great moments must be cherished and not wasted by thinking of some religious clashes that may have been reported in the past," said Khan.
