MARGAO
With as many as three newly-elected councilors under home quarantine and a councilor undergoing treatment for Covid, elections for the posts of chairperson and deputy chairperson of Margao council scheduled for May 10 stand postponed.
The postponement came after the Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes dispatched a report to the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) saying that as many as four newly-councilors will not be able to attend the May 10 meeting because of the Covid situation.
The Chief Officer and his staff realised that three councilors have quarantined themselves at home when the staff had gone there with notice for a meeting scheduled for May 10. “No sooner my staff brought to my notice that three councilors and their relatives refused to accept the notices, I prepared a report and dispatched the same to the DMA for consideration”, Agnelo said.
He said the fourth councilor had earlier tested positive and was undergoing treatment.
The Margao Civic Alliance floated by Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat and Goa Forward Chief Vijai Sardesai, which had swept the elections for the MMC held last month, was all set to get their nominee elected as the new Chairperson of the Margao Civic body.
