Superintendent of Police, South, Sunita Sawant, on Wednesday said the Margao police have registered a case of alleged negligence against the then in-charge of ESI Hospital, Dr Vishwajeet Desai, upon the directions of the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Margao.
She said the case pertains to an incident that occurred on February 15, 2023, at ESI Hospital.
A complaint to this effect was lodged by Suraj Sawant, a resident of Khadapaband, Ponda, stating that on February 5, 2023, between 09:30 hrs and 17:30 hrs at ESI Hospital Margao, Dr Vishwajeet Desai, in charge of ESI Hospital, allegedly acted negligently while treating the patient, Sunayna Dessai, wife of Simmo Dessai, a resident of Krishna Colony, Ghanemorod, Xeldem, Quepem, thereby resulting in her death while undergoing minor surgery for left-hand thumb arthritis.
Prior to the registration of the offence, the matter was referred to the Medical Board at Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, Goa.
SP Sawant said the Margao police will take up the investigations based on the post-mortem examination report and the report of the Medical Board that was constituted to investigate the matter.
