The Supreme Court order may bring cheers for bar owners in Margao and Cuncolim, the two Municipal areas in Salcete taluka following the Supreme Court order, but many a bar owner in Salcete's countryside, including Nuvem, Verna, Navelim, Raia, Camurlim, Davorlim, Curtorim may face the axe with both the NH-17 and the state highway passing through these villages.
Excise officials told The Goan on Sunday that the Supreme Court order has brought relief to the bars in the jurisdiction of Margao and Cuncolim t
"In the next three days, Salcete excise officials will compile a report on the status of the bars in both Margao and Cuncolim and forward the same to the Excise head office. This will set in motion the process towards the renewal of license for bars in the two towns," he said.
The Sword of Damocles had been hanging over most of the bars in the commercial capital since both the NH-17 and the state highways were passing through the city. While a host of bars, including the iconic Longuinhos was facing closure as it was coming within the 500 meter jurisdiction fixed by the Supreme Court initially, bars along Fatorda and Aquem-Malbhat- Pajifond area of the city were also facing the axe with the State highways passing through these area.
As far as Cuncolim is concerned, excise officials pointed out that almost all the bars, which were earlier facing the axe, stands saved in view of the latest SC order. Earlier, 90 per cent of the bars, mostly located in the market area, were facing closure as the NH-17 is passing right through the town. Excise officials, however, conceded that bars located within 500 meters of the NH-17 and state highways passing through Verna-Nuvem and Navelim-Sirlim- Chinchinim villages will face closure if they are falling within the distance. That's not all. Bars located along the Raia-Borim bridge state highway, besides liquor outlets along the Davorlim-Curchorem state highway will face closure, an excise officer stated.
